Discover all our Animals...

We have, over time, collected a wides and varied selection of different animals on the farm. The majority have been farmyard animals, but there have also been a few more unusual animals too.

You'll find a basic introduction to the animals on this page - if you're interested in finding out a bit more then click on the links in the menu.

Cattle
The farm is home to a small herd of British Longhorn cattle - 'Fortress Longhorns'. These magnificent cattle grow impressive horns (hence the name...). Some of our Longhorns have won prizes on the show circuit - ask us and we'll point them out for you.
We have previously kept Simmentals, Herefords and commercial beef cattle too.

Sheep
We have a couple of different breeds of sheep on the farm. The 'Ryelands' & 'Coloured Ryelands' are a local breed of sheep. Their origins date back over 700 years ago when local monks grazed their flocks on rye grass, giving them their name.
Another breed of sheep that we keep are 'Jacob Sheep'. They are considered an ancient breed descended from the sheep of biblical times. Just watch out for their horns!!

Pigs
The British Saddleback is an iconic modern breed of pig. They were first recognised in 1967 when the few remaining Essex and Wessex Saddleback herds were merged together. As a breed they are very effect foragers - they can be used for both pork & bacon.
We have previously kept Tamworths, Berkshires and Landrace pigs.

Equine
We don't have a stable block on the farm but we do still have three equine residents.
Mr Todd is a Welsh Pony, Fuzz is a Miniature Shetland and Jack is a Donkey. They are all real characters but they can all 'play the diva' and bully each others so you'll rarely find all three of them together!

Poultry
The poultry sheds are filled with various different feathered creatures. We have group of Laying Hens to keep us stocked up with eggs. If they're all out when you visit. you may get to see ducks, chickens, turkeys, geese & rheas.

Goats
Our Boer Goats are eating machines - they love grazing, climbing and escaping. The breed are originally from South Africa. Traditionally you should expect to see a brown head & neck and a white body - though other colour variations patterns are acceptable too.
